Sony to Introduce PlayStation 4 at $399.



LOS ANGELES—Sony Corp. 6758.TO +2.17% will sell its soon-to-be-launched PlayStation 4 videogame console for $399, significantly undercutting the $499 rival Microsoft Corp. MSFT -0.56% is charging for its latest machine.

At its presentation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sony said the PS4 will sell for €399 (around $530) in Europe, though the company didn't offer further details on when it plans to launch the game console. Earlier Monday, Microsoft said it would introduce its new machine, the Xbox One, in November.

Sony also struck at Microsoft's controversial disc-usage rules for the Xbox One. Sony said it won't place any new restrictions on PS 4 users playing used games or keeping the system offline.

Last week, Microsoft, said games for its Xbox One might include stricter limits if resold or lent to friends. The company also said the Xbox needs to be connected to the Internet every 24 hours.

Jack Tretton, the head of its U.S. PlayStation business, said the PS4 won't implement the most unpopular aspects of Microsoft's rights-management restrictions, including daily digital check-ins, user authentication rules and the ability to share game discs with friends.
